The current research examines the situation of the learning of English reading skills by Chinese technical secondary school students. In the discussion that follows, we will tackle problems that they are currently facing and then put forward some countermeasures help improve the teaching of reading in these schools. We view reading as a dynamic process in which the reader "constructs" meaning based on information he gathers from the text, instead of viewing it as a relatively static activity. Schema theory is employed in the discussion to help achieve a better understanding of the process of reading. After a review of the problems, we find ourselves justified in giving some suggestions and countermeasures. As a conclusion, teaching students how to use effective strategies in the reading class suggests considerable significance in the students' development of English reading skills.
