One of the purposes of Functional Grammar is to be applied to textual analysis. Functional Grammar has three metafunctions: the ideational, the interpersonal and the textual. Most of the texts are analyzed in terms of the textual metafunction. This thesis analyzes the teacher talk from interpersonal metafunction in order to discuss the performance of teacher talk and fulfillment of interpersonal meaning;to make a research on the quantity of teacher talk;the pattern of interaction between teacher and students;the feedback of classroom interaction, etc.This thesis aims to provide a clear and simple account of teacher talk for the widest possible audience. It tries to illustrate the topic according to the following three points: 1) teacher talk plays the key important role in organizing the classroom teaching and the procedure of learning language by learners. The quality and quantity of teacher talk will even decide whether the teaching will succeed or not. 2) Many theories and practices about discourse analysis have helped us to understand the language in using, enriched the teaching materials in classroom and led to the successful and organic combination of teacher talk and teaching. 3) In the framework of functional grammar, the interpersonal function extends out of sentences, and defines interpersonal meaning in terms of epistemic, evaluative and interactive method. That means teacher talk is the important resource to express interpersonal meaning.This thesis elaborates the classroom teaching activities from three aspects;namely, the extension of interpersonal meaning, analysis of teacher talk in classroom conversation and the fulfillment of interpersonal meaning of teacher talk. We get the conclusion at last: we can widen the teaching field according to the thoughts of discourse analysis and interpersonal meaning;and we can strengthen the teacher talk to strike the classroom interaction by understanding the interpersonal meaning better.
