Optimization Of English Reading Strategies In The Country Senior Middle School

There exists a common phenomenon in the country senior middle school students' English reading (Just like my school --- Xiacun Middle School, which lies in a village, where students mostly come from country areas.) that most students have learned a large number of words, phrases, grammars and some related cultures, but they could not do the reading well, they were very poor at English reading comprehension and they got very low marks in their reading. In order to find out the answers, the author made detailed investigation into Grade 3, Grade 2 and Grade 1 of the country senior middle school, and at last the author found that besides the words, the phrases and the cultural backgrounds, the main factors leading to the students' scores in their reading and their failure in reading comprehension were lack of reading strategies and the improper using of themBased on the cognitive strategies and adjustive strategies and combined with the present situation of the students of the country senior middle schools in their reading, the author took an investigation of Grade 3, Grade 2 and Grade 1 of the country senior middle school in terms of such questions as what reading strategies they are using, when they use and how they can use. After a detailed investigation and analysis of the factors constraining students' reading ability, this paper focuses on optimizing the reading strategies which are suited to the country senior middle school students' English reading comprehension. During the term's study, the author had the students keep testing in the form of monthly test. After continual try and practice, strategies adapted to the country senior high school students' English reading are optimized at last. The result of comparing the students' scores of 'monthly test' with the scores before using the related reading strategies revealed that their reading degrees took on a rising trend gradually. This research verified that the optimized reading strategies which meet the students' reading and their reading demands can not only improve their reading situation but also increase their scores in reading comprehension.Although 'the optimized strategies' can improve the students' reading scores, however, learning is a continuously developing process, and the knowledge is renewing continuously. As a result, 'strategies' are not constant truth. So 'the optimized strategies' in this paper do not hope to have, and also unlikely to have the long-term effect, but hope that the students can learn to think on the basis of reading strategies and make their English reading more effective in the future.
