There is a feature in American higher education that is there is a close contact between American universities and society. Teaching and researching in universities are always adapting to the development of society and satisfying the public's needs. In fact this is the function of colleges and universities'social service function. The progression from the teaching function to the researching function used about 700 years, while from the researching function to the social service function only used about 50 years. So the social service function of colleges and universities and its progressional factors are a valuable area to research. This paper will take the historical progress of social service function in colleges and universities as a researching object, take the American research universities'practices as a motif. There are four sections in this paper, the first one is about several basic theoretical questions on social service function. the second one is about the historical progressional courses on social service function in American research universities. The third one is about the historical progressional factors on social service function. The last part is about the philosophical foundation on historical progressional process. The courses and the factors of social service function's historical progress are the main body of this paper.The courses of progression: During the period of colonial colleges, due to having inherited the"school-based system"from Europe especially the UK, the American colleges and universities founded in that time only paid attention to the impartation of knowledge and the godliness of religion, thus gradually they became an"ivory tower".
