Learning is everyone's task during his life. The basic target of education is to make the students be independent and effective learners. It's very important to guide the students to learn to how to study and foster their valid learning strategy. It can not only improve learning effect, lighten students' study burden as well as improve education quality over large areas. In recent decades, education circles have been paying close attention to learning strategy. Among so many learning strategies,metacognitive strategies are considered as the most crucial one and higher than other strategies.Metacognition is about cognition of cognition, having wide and deep influence in education and language field. The paper introduces metacognitive theory which includes three parts: metacognitve knowledge, metacognitve experience and metacognitve monitoring. And its function in autonomous learning of foreign languages and how to cultivate the ability are discussed for promoting learner autonomy, enhance learning efficiency to meet education's requirement.The study of metacognitive strategy is reflection of"the students-center"thought .The term was put forward by Flavell J.H, an American psychologist, in the 1970s.It is concerned about effective monitor to learning process of students.It includes planning strategy, monitoring strategy and evaluating strategy. Students can evaluate their own ability and choose effective ways to analyze and solve the problems. To make the students grasp effective metacognitive strategy in English study , teachers must give proper training and guide. Based on the study of the relevant literature home and abroad,The thesis questionnaire , investigation and data analysis to study the practical application of English metacognitive strategy in order to analyze existing problems then put forward some countermeasures. This thesis attempts to discuss and solve some practical problems in English study .The result of the study shows metacognitive strategy hasn't been laid stress on, fully developed or utilized in middle school. It hasn't been fully infiltrated into English classroom teaching. Students lack related knowledge about learning strategy. They can't choose valid strategy during the study process. Teachers don't give special training about metacognitive strategy to their students. We must strengthen metacognitive strategy in order to carry out education reform and foster students' learning ability .Course reform advocates the change of learning style. It encourages autonomous learning. The practical application value of metacognitive strategy should be paid much attention to during the change of learning style. And teachers should penetrate metacognitive strategy and try to make it run through their English teaching. Making the students learn to choose valid metacognitive strategy in their study is very important. It's the better way to achieve the real value of education .
