The thesis fully analyses the multimedia Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) in English, on the base of summarizing the traditional ways of teaching. The thesis focuses on the following issues: The researching status of the application of multimedia CAI at home and abroad; the features of CAI and multimedia CAI; the function of computer in teaching; the theory base of multimedia CAI; the study of the teaching effects of multimedia CAI on middle school English ; the analysis and discussion of the researching results of the testing materials between the experimental class and the contrast one; the conclusion of the teaching effects of multimedia CAI on middle school English.Based on the principles of multimedia CAI, the author presents nine indices to evaluate CAI in class. These indices, obtained through questionnaires among students, illustrate quantitatively changes of teaching effects which have taken place owing to the use of multimedia CAI in class. Along together with the analyses of the students' academic records for comparison and contrast from the class, these indices could be instrumental in evaluating the practical effects of multimedia CAI in all. There are two kinds of results of this research. One is directly from the figure analysis results of the teaching experiments, and the other is from the feeling of the teacher during the process of the teaching and all kinds of reaction of the students.The results of the teaching experiments are:I . Multimedia CAI conspicuously exceeds conventional teaching in such aspects as arousing interest of students, improving the students' listening and speaking level and raising the efficiency of teaching.II. Multimedia CAI is a little bit superior to conventional teaching in the aspects like comprehensive effect, arousing the thinking of students, helping improve their writing level and their attention to the study.
