With the deepening of the reform of English teaching in high school, more and more teachers have recognized that the aim of English teaching is not only to help the students pass every test, but to enable them to communicate in daily life. Now most of the high school students can read some English articles, even do some simple writing, but they can hardly make themselves understood through speaking. The main reason for this phenomenon is that the lack of confidence and poor speaking ability lead to their not daring to open their mouths. Thus the students are trapped into a negative cycle from which they can hardly find a way out without careful leading. Therefore, nowadays, English teachers are putting more and more emphasis on how to improve the teaching of speaking and how to develop the students' oral ability both in and out of the classroom.The writer thinks that speaking is a weak part in high school's English teaching due to the current purpose of learning and teaching. Especially in senior high schools, both teachers and students are under the pressure of taking exams and entering college, they usually regard speaking as an unimportant aspect. As a result, "dumb English" now has become a big problem to solve. The writer proposes that speaking in senior high school should be laid special emphasis on and it needs improving. English teachers should design their speaking lessons carefully, arrange related teaching tasks and try to realize them with effective teaching methods. The writer suggests that in order to improve the teaching effect of speaking, teachers should pay attention to the following tips: First, try to stimulate the students' motivation and interest in speaking; Second, make an easy atmosphere in class to build their confidence; Third, carry out various activities to get the students active in class.In order to ensure the effect of speaking teaching, the high school English teachers had better change their teaching modes from traditional face-to-face teaching in class to interactivc teaching both inside and outside classroom. What's more, teachers can be also improved together with the students in this mode.
