As a teaching focus and difficult one, vocabulary teaching has been a hot topic to explore in the education field. This paper, lays emphasis on basic standpoints of the cognitive linguistics: the prototype theory, the underlying link between the polysemy of words, the metaphorical and metonymical meaning of words. It explores what and how to teach in English vocabulary teaching from the aspects of the choice of proper words, concepts and interpretations of words, the cultural vocabulary content and usage, with the purpose of revealing the cognitive features of vocabulary teaching and seeking a new approach to vocabulary teaching in middle schools that is in keep with rules of human's cognitive development. And it points out that Cognitive Linguistics theory will be used to promote English vocabulary teaching practice and enhance teaching effectiveness.
