With the development of the information society, the education in China has stepped into a new stage. The English teaching and learning is facing a serious challenge from society. At the same time, modern education technology offers new chances for the improvement of English teaching efficiency. The rapid development and widespread application of web-based multimedia technology has opened up a new field for multimedia-assisted English teaching. However, currently the study about the application of web-based multimedia to English teaching is comparably backward, especially in listening instruction. The thesis makes a brief introduction to the significance and necessity of applying web-based multimedia to language instruction, focusing on the current English listening instruction and the problems existing in hampering students' listening proficiency. Then the thesis states advantages, the rationale, and feasibility of web-based multimedia environment assisting the teaching of listening comprehension in high schools. The thesis focuses on the study of "The Influence of Web-based Multimedia Environment on Students' Listening Comprehension". And the author conducts a one-year experiment on the topic.A quasi experiment was conducted in an ordinary secondary school in Quanzhou City Fujian Province. 126 Senior Grade Two students are involvement in the experiment. They are divided into two natural classes with 63 each. One was an experimental group, and the other a control group. The experimental groupis assigned to use the new means and the new learning models while the control group sticks to the traditional ones. A pre-test conducted before the quasi experiment shows no significant difference in English proficiency between the experimental group and the control group. At the end of the one-year experiment, a post-test is administered in the two class, showing significant difference in English listening proficiency between the two classes, which indicates that the new means and the new learning models are more effective than the traditional ones for the development of the students' listening proficiency. The experiment also indicates that web-based multimedia can help the teacher but can never replace the teacher completely. A teacher has to make full use of the resources on the web in listening instruction. In the process of the experiment, some disadvantages of the new teaching approach are revealed. Accordingly, some suggestions and recommendations are put forward to solve them, which may be of benefits for other teachers' reference.
