The academies of classical learning in Gansu originated in Ming Dynasty and bloomed in Qing Dynasty. Despite the changing academy policies and the turbulent social environment, academies of Qing Dynasty in Gansu prospered and amounted to 70. Compared with those academies located in the better developed inner land, academies in Gansu which came into being much late were less developed and achieved less in academy and system, their influence upon the education in the region, however, can not be ignored. Taking academies of Qing Dynasty in Gansu as the objects and resorting to the historical records and the local chronicles as well as the anthology, the present thesis makes a deep investigation into the academies of Qing Dynasty in Gansu from a perspective of education sociology and education culturology.The introduction part of the present thesis first introduces the background of the present topic and the former studies about academies in Gansu, then, the weaknesses of the former studies are analyzed and the significance of the present study, its object and research methodology are pointed out.The following part describes the history of academies in Gansu pointing out that academies in Gansu underwent five periods.Then, based on the investigation of the ups and downs of academies in Gansu, the five major factors that influenced the development of the academies are found out.The third part puts forward the nine main features of academies of Qing Dynasty in Gansu through an analysis of the academies' teaching and management systems.The fourth part is a study of the academies' functions and finds out that the academies not only brought up and trained many talents, but also fostered the culture development of the period and had far-reaching influent upon the present teaching methodology, education management system and talent recruitment.At last, with by the tide of "the school replaced the academy" , the academies in Gansu experienced its own transfer from the academy to the school and played an decisive role in modernization of education in the region.
