The popularization and internationalization of higher education, the establishment of the status of independent legal person of colleges and the diversity demands for higher education make the colleges competition more and more fiercely. In the domestic even global competitions, only by participating in competitions on its own initiative and developing the core competence can a higher vocational college obtain the initiative of existence and development and therefore show its international competence. Nowadays, however, higher vocational colleges in our country universally don't have much core competence for various reasons.The core competence of a higher vocational college is the competitive advantage developed in the long-term school-running process. It is unique and contained in the organization. It is the total of the college's various capacities of obtaining initiative in the environment of competition. It is the expression of the college's comprehensive quality and competence. It has four characteristics: the value to users, system integration, uniqueness of technique and changeability of value.The core competence of a higher vocational college consists of the key technical capacity, creative managing capacity and cultural power. It can increase the college's competitive advantage, combine the college's strategy source, form the college's band and increase the college's capacity to adapt the environment.The effective ways of developing the core competence of a higher vocational college are as follows: formulating the strategy, reforming the college system, combining the organization source, optimizing the educational service value chain, forming the key technical capacity, creating famous subjects and specialties, renewing managing capacity and renewing campus culture, and setting up a studying organization.
