The New Standard of National English Curriculum holds that cultivating and developing students'autonomous learning is a great transition in terms of English language learning and teaching. It is also an important goal to cultivate students into lifelong learners. However, the traditional teaching method leads to students' lacking autonomous learning ability and being overdepedent on teachers, which does not comply with the final edeucation goal of fostering independent learners. Therefore, the contemperoary teaching emphasizes developing the students' creativity and autonomous learning ablility. Based on the reality of senior middle school students, classroom teaching is the locus where we should turn to for improving the situation. So this thesis focuses on how the teacher cultivates senior middle school students' automonous learning in English class. After making a survey about the present situation of senior middle school students' autonomous learning, the author determines the core of the research is to make students the master of their learning. Guided by the thought that education is done for students' development, the teacher is supposed to respect and satisfy students' emotional needs, arouse students' curiosity and interest in learning; the teacher should also help students to cultivate positive and good personality, and thus they can learn with great confidence and independence. The purpose of classroom teaching is not only for the teacher to help students gain knowledge but also help them to learn various learning strategies. More importantly, the teacher should help students find their own learning strategies. Only in this way are students likely to lay foundation of becoming an independent life-long learner.Hence in this research, the author has taken the following measures to cultivate and develop students'autonomous learning ability.First of all, the teacher provides as many "learner choices" for students to choose proper learning tasks in class and many opportunites for students to shoulder their learning responsibility by themselves. That can highlight the student's role as the master of learning. Secondly, the teacher fosters students'positive emotions and creates a harmonous interactive relationship between teachers and students. And various teaching avctivities are offered to arouse and maintain students'interest in learning.Thirdly, the teacher combines different teaching tasks with different strategy training according to both students'needs and teaching materials. Finally, the teacher creates many chances for students to have cooperative learning both in class and after class, for cooperative learning can make students more active and motivated in class, get access to more learning sources and reduce learning anxiety and increase confidence. In a word, students can really become their own master of learing. Last but not the least, the teacher's self-reflection about the classroom teaching is beneficial to both the teacher and the students. In the auther's teacing practice, all these measures above have proved very effective in cultivating and developing students'autonomous learning ability.
