Language is an unique instinct of the humans. Learning language is to communicate better with it. In fact, pragmatic competence plays a very important role in the successful communication. Good linguistic knowledge can only ensure the accuracy of language in a linguistic communication. It is generally believed that pragmatic competence is the criterion used to judge whether a performance is effective or not. Also New English Curriculum Standards (NCS) set the whole goal is to train students'integrated language abilities. Therefore training and improving students'pragmatic competence is one of the main tasks in Foreign Language Teaching in China.Reviewing the history of foreign language teaching in our country, as the long-standing traditional teaching conception, teaching materials and teaching ways, middle school students in China have weak pragmatic competence. To change this situation, the author thinks that it is important element to cultivate students'pragmatic competence by using some proper methods. It presents that the effective method to cultivate students'pragmatic competence is a extracurricular reading. Based on the survey of the English teaching situation and students' English integrated competence at Dongguang Middle School in Changchun, the author carried out an experiment in this Middle School to testify its validity and feasibility.The result shows that it is necessary to conduct the extracurricular reading in the middle school. It can be effectively and favorably improved students'pragmatic competence. In the light of the finding from the survey, suggestions on how to conduct extracurricular English reading activities in middle school are proposed. The author wants to encourage English teachers to direct students to conduct extracurricular reading effectively and give them some useful suggestions in this paper.
