In China, English is learned as a foreign language. In the twenty-first century the information of social life and the globalization of economy make English more and more important. As a part of English learning, it is self-evident that English reading is important. Reading teaching is always valued in English teaching including senior English teaching. Although English teachers and students devote themselves to reading very much, the achievements of English reading comprehension aren't very satisfying, even students can't often pass reading examination. The main purpose of the thesis is to research the obstacles and their causes of senior students'English reading comprehension in quality and quantity and to suggest corresponding teaching countermeasures, and to provide reference for increasing senior middle school students'English reading skills and improving senior English reading teaching's status quo.The thesis surveys the grade two students'obstacles of English reading comprehension in Fushun No. 10 Senior School, Fushun Dongzhou Senior School and Fushun No. 7 Senior School by a questionnaire, and investigates the teaching status quo of senior English reading and status quo of senior students'English reading separately by interviewing three teachers who teach grade two English in the above three senior schools and 12 grade two students who participated in the questionnaire, and uses statistics software of EXCEL which works under WINDOWS to count and analyze the data that is collected from the questionnaire, and at the same time arranges and analyses the notes of interview.The following are the three main conclusions of this thesis.1. There are linguistic obstacles and nonlinguistic obstacles in senior students'English reading comprehension. Linguistic obstacles show in three aspects: namely the aspect of vocabulary, the aspect of syntax, the aspect of discourse, and nonlinguistic obstacles mainly show in seven aspects. They are 1) the aspect of cognitive psychology─intellective elements 2) the aspect of cognitive psychology─non-intellective elements 3) the aspect of background knowledge 4) the aspect of feel for the language 5) the aspect of reading purpose 6) the aspect of reading skill 7) the aspect of reading strategies.2. The obstacles in senior students'English reading comprehension are mainly caused by the status quo and its disadvantages of senior English reading teaching and senior students'English reading.3. The thesis suggests teaching countermeasures in three aspects. They are: 1) to change teaching concepts and to seek effective teaching patterns 2) teaching countermeasures in linguistic obstacles of English reading comprehension 3) teaching countermeasures in non-linguistic obstacles of English reading comprehension. And detailed teaching countermeasures are separately suggested in the three aspects of linguistic obstacles and the seven aspects of non-linguistic obstacles.
