At present, the nationwide elementary curriculum reform is being carried, and whether it succeeds or not depends greatly on educational assessment. The new curriculum need new educational assessment, its root aim is promotes students' development. The educational assessment which applied to new curriculum should show developmental function of the educational assessment, emphasize the interaction and participation of the principal assessment part, assessment content and the multiplicity of the ways and the dynamic development of assessment process, and so on. Seen from the present situation of new curriculum carried out, however, there is a long distance between the old educational assessment system and the new curriculum. It can not give new curriculum a powerful support. Many problems exist in practical operation, such as overemphasizing discrimination and selection, paying too much attention to the assessment of the mastering text knowledge and summative assessment pay too much attention to paper and pen's testing and the assessment from up to down, and so on. It has affected the development of the task of new curriculum reform and students' development.Formative assessment is also called procedural assessment, its aim is to find out each student's potential, to improve student's studying methods and provide feedback for teachers. It cares about student's development and also to emphasize the teacher's growth.On the whole, the thesis has two parts:The first part mainly studies the theory of the formative assessment. It definite formative assessment and summarizes its characteristic, on the one hand; It deals with the promotable function of the formative assessment for middle school's mathematics teaching, on the other hand.The second part list the methods and means which the formative assessment adopt firstly, secondly, it lists the operative principal of the formative assessment and carry out practical analysis on the base of it.The thesis designed to further perfect the theory of the formative assessment, to construct a assessment framework for educational workers to reference. I hope it can be useful for the carrying out the new curriculum.
