With the economic development of rural and urban areas and the deepening implementation of reform and open-up policy, a large number of surplus labour have appeared in many countrysides of our country because of the improvement of productive tools and techniques. In order to increase their income as well as meet the demand of urban development, many farmers rush to work in cities. They are new mainstream of labour in reform and open-up, urbanization and industrialization. Among them there are also minorities. Hui nationality, with distinctive commercial tradition, has followed the trend. In recent years, with the increase of migrant workers of nothwestern hui nationality, many youngesters of hui nationality have dropped out of school to be employed as migrant workers. The current situation is thought-provoking. What has caused them to leave school for work? This paper, based on the case study of three communities of Zhangjiachuan autonomous county of hui nationality, conducts an analysis of and exploration on relevant aspects concerning this phenomenon, and proposes some coping suggestions for reference.
