Reading is an essential skill for English as a second/foreign language (ESL/EFL) student; and for many, reading is the most important skill to master. With strengthened reading skills, students will make greater progress and attain greater development in all academic areas."New English Curriculum Standards"demands clearly that senior school English courses emphasize on the development of the students'reading strategies, reading skill, especially the abilities of gaining and dealing with the information during their reading process. It aims at the students'interests, life experience and cognitive level , advocates the learning methods of experience practice, participant, cooperation, communication, makes the process of learning language the one that develops the students'active sensibility, thought and experience bravely and promoting the students'cross-culture consciousness and the ability of studying independently.This text addresses the integration of theory and practice through teaching strategies for senior English reading classes. The key word ACTIVE not only helps us remember six elements of personal philosophy, but it also reminds us that reading is an active process and not a passive skill. The word ACTIVE stands for six strategies I would like us to consider when teaching an ESL/EFL reading class:A Activate prior knowledgeC Cultivate vocabularyT Teach for comprehensionI Increase reading rateV Verify reading strategiesE Evaluate progressThis emphasizes the interactive nature of the reading process, that each skill and strategy ties into others.
