Being one of the three components in a language, grammar forms the very basis of listening, speaking, reading and writing process. With the task-based approach becoming more and more popular in language teaching and thus proposed as a main approach in The New National English Curriculum Standard, the present paper attempts to explore the possibility of integrating Enabling tasks(ET) and Communicative tasks(CT) in English grammar teaching with a view to helping students improving their communicative competence in the process of acquiring grammar knowledge.Adopted in this paper is the combination of three methods or approaches, ranging from literature review through empirical studies to case analyses.A fairly comprehensive analysis based on relevant theories, contrastive studies of pre-texts and post-texts in grammar on the part of subjects and the information obtained from questionnaires for the intended purposes leads to the conclusion that the integration of Enabling Tasks and Communicative Tasks in English grammar teaching is quite practical and effective.Nevertheless, with the task-based approach being at its experimental stage in middle school English teaching in China, blind adoption without careful analysis should be avoided, and further studies are needed to make it complementary to traditional approaches suited and adjusted to meet the demands of the present situation in China.
