Along with the gradual deepening of the reform of higher education administration system, the widening of the autonomy of higher education institutions, the promoting of Undergraduate Teaching Evaluation, school characteristics became one of the most-concerned issues in higher education. School characteristics are the priority issue of higher education institutions, the concentrated expression of the core competitiveness, and the focus to enhance the overall strength of China's higher education as well. Following the developing route of school characteristics is not only the survival strategy, but also a development strategy of the institutions; meanwhile, it is in line with both tool rationality and value rationality. However, kinds of phenomena indicate that the characteristics of many colleges and universities in our country are not distinct and striking enough.Starting with the fundamental issues regarding the content, nature and composition of school characteristics, the paper analyzed the restriction factors regarding the formation of school characteristics, and probed into the relationship between characteristics and the development of the universities and colleges. Then based on the self-assessment reports of Undergraduate Teaching Evaluation, the paper made a thorough research into the current status of the school characteristics, summed up the cases and reasons why some institutions can refine and cultivate school characteristics accurately and conveniently. The paper drew two main reasons on the difficulty of refining the characteristics as follows,(1)the positioning of some schools is not accurate, (2)the characteristics of the schools themselves are not distinct. In light of these problems, taking Huazhong University of Science and Technology as a typical case, the paper conducted a deep probe into the content, the refining process and the cultivation of the school characteristics.Based on the case analysis, the author concluded that the higher education institutions should reinforce their characteristics cultivation in such ways as to exert the leading effects of the university presidents, to pass on the excellent culture of the university, to expand the professional advantages of disciplines, to optimize the mode of talent training, to make the best use of school autonomy and to introduce the mechanism of fair competition.
