Language transfer has long been a controversial topic in applied linguistics, second language acquisition and language teaching for many years. The theory of language transfer was proposed in the 1950s. There are two kinds of language transfers–positive transfer and negative transfer. Those elements that are similar to one's native language will be simple for him, and those elements that are different will be difficult. Therefore, positive transfer can help students study English well while negative transfer can hinder their English learning. This thesis mainly discusses the effect of native language transfer on English learning of Senior High School Students. Since positive transfer can help students study English well while negative transfer can hinder their English learning, we should use positive transfer to facilitate their learning and should try to overcome problems caused by negative transfer. On the basis of previous research, the present paper is a detailed exploration in the positive and negative transfer in English writing in various aspects, such as pronunciation, words, grammar, sentence structure and so on and the transfer phenomenon is analyzed from three perspectives, that is, the language, the learning environment and the learner. This thesis also tries to find out effective ways of teaching to solve the problems. It is proposed that effective methods, such as translating, error comparison between the two languages, reciting the texts and guided writing can be used to avoid the Chinese transfer and to arouse students'interest in leaning English and improve their writing skills.
