As the core content in modern mathematics, the function takes up an important position in the domain of mathematics, which is also the centre of mathematic teaching in the senior middle school and the theory should be laid great emphasis. Nevertheless, there exist widespread problems in the function teaching due to the abstraction of function content .The research at home and abroad through research analysis in the design of teaching based on the theory, put forward a function of the general pattern of instructional design , and the research aims at resolving the current problems in function teaching and two classes are selected as the research targets (class A and class B). In class A (62 students), the function teaching is designed and improved under the guidance of the new curriculum standards and related theories. In contrast to the former one, traditional and conventional methods are adopted in class B (63 students).The evaluation standards are uniform to both classes—team test and face-to-face interview applied to touch the true idea of student. Thereafter, some analytic researches on the test results are made and the conclusion is that students in class A have a better command over function than those in class B. But when it comes to normalization of solving mathematics questions and the exactness of mathematics notions, class B performs better than class A. In addition, it is common to both classes that students have great difficulties in the comprehension of tabulation method of functions, graph of piecewise function and they pay little attention on the nature of function.The author propose several suggestions regarding strategies and ways of improving function teaching quality: Teachers should renew their teaching idea, design teaching and adopt multi-media teaching method properly on the base; Students'initiative is stimulated and students'emotion is cared about; Teaching of essential features, representation method and application examples of function is strengthened.
