The characteristics of competition and coexistence of self-pumped phase conjugation (SPPC) and mutually pumped phase conjugation (MPPC) in the photorefractive(PR) crystal are studied, with the physical mechanism analyzed. The dependence is obtained experimentally of the output properties of SPPC and MPPC coexistence on pump parameters of both the pump beams. In order to improve the existing PR adaptive optical heterodyne detection system (PRAOHDS), a new PRAOHDS is proposed based on SPPC and MPPC coexistence. The experimental study of the system is completed by equal amplitude Ar+ laser beams, poorly coherent equal amplitude solid-state laser beams and high speed amplitude-modulated solid-state laser beams through distorting media. Experimental results indicate that the new system is applicable. Compared with the PRAOHDS available, only one PR crystal is used in the proposed system, thus making it simple, responsive and easy to adjust. In addition, a new phenomenon of PR effect is reported, which we call standing-wave in the PR crystal. The initial experiment study is conducted.
