Application of new technology, such as information technology, modern management methodology, and integration of qualitative and quantitative analysis technology, on complex steel manufacturing will bring scientific decision-making, quality product, high productivity and cost efficient production in the industry. At the present time, a management information system for steel making, LG-MIS, and a PC-based control system for process control of converter, PZLLGPS, has been established in Panzhihua Iron and Steel Corporation. However, it is still a long way to optimize the scheduling in production, increase the hit ratio of steel grade because of existing amount of scheduling based on expert scheduling. Match between converter and continuos caster in capacity will be paid more attention after upcoming upgrade of continuos casting system. Decision support system, presented in early 1980's, is a technique for solving problem that is structural or non-structural mathematically. In this thesis, the advances in decision support system have been reviewed. An intelligent decision support system for steel production in Panzhihua Iron and Steel Corporation, LG-IDSS, has been established. The focus of research work has been placed on subsystem of production planning in LG-IDSS. A timed Petri nets model for simulating the production scheduling in present process and future continuos casting process has been built. Finally, the model has been programming into software based on object-oriented software design methodology with Visual Basic6.0 program language. Some of case tests have been carried out based on plant practice in steel making division of Panzhihua Iron and Steel Corporation The production planning sub-system of LG-IDSS can be used for making, optimizing and adjusting on-going plan of steel making production in the plant. Compared with manual method, it takes only five minutes to establish a schedule by means of the model. Meanwhile, optimization of schedule can be a scheme that can save the time of process from smelting to continuous casting. In the research case of 11 tapping during night shift on December 31, 2000, optimized schedule strategy can cut down 65 minutes at most used for processing from charging into converter to slab out of caster for each tapping. With the model, it is possible to dynamically adjust schedule and reorder or reorganize production process.It has been shown that LG-IDSS is an extendable and maintainable DSS system. Its better decision support for steel making production in Panzhihua Iron and Steel Corporation will be based on further improvement of the model.
