With the development of network technologies, distance education, a new way forteaching, makes teaching resource be shared efficiently. During the course of design anddevelopment of distance education system, it is difficult to realize real-time teachingsystem. Video conference technology now is getting relatively mature. However,Multi-point control unit (MCU), the key equipment of video conference, is usuallyrealized by the way of hardware, which is very costliness. According to the characters of distance education, this paper introduces thetechnology of MCU to distance education system by the way of software, to realize realtime teaching. More attention is paid on the key technologies on MCU system,including the protocols on streaming media, the traditional network video codingtechnologies, H.264 video coding technologies, transmission technologies of video data.Some improvements are made to the pitfalls of those technologies. Finally, the detaileddescription is given to the design of the functional components in MCU.
