As the evolution of TV technologies, the research and development of Set-top Box (STB) plays more and more important roles, and has a good market prospects.The developing trend of STB is to support more and more applications, and the PVR (Personal Video Record) STB is just a product of this trend. In the Digital TV field, the PVR STB is a characteristic terminal, combining the STB and the PVR technologies. The key technology of PVR is digital video and memory, and its outstanding characteristic is to create buffers with great capacity and a huge program database using the hard disk as the memory medium, and to control and manage the programs in order to enable the users to enjoy them at any time depending on the digital processing technology. The programs stored in the hard disk can be played at high speed or be paused as one pleases.As for the STBs with same quality and functions, the products that offer beautiful and friendly User Interface will be highly competitive. So the development of the Graphic Library and the design of the User Interface are very important for STBs.The foundation of developing the PVR function and User Interface is the good knowledge of the traits of the system, the functions of the main chips and the characteristics and structure of the operating system, especially the main system functions and the way to program on it. This thesis is complied as follows. Firstly, it introduces the functions, features and developing environments of two STB systems based on different schemes of Broadcom: BCM93710 SDTV system and BCM97115 HDTV system. Secondly, the thesis describes the characteristics of the operating systems pSOS and Linux and the way to program on them. And then it presents the development of the Graphic Library and the design and implementation of the User Interface with flexible architecture. Lastly, the thesis focuses on the fundamental functions of the PVR STB and the implementation of the PVR functions.
