| Due to emergence of many new network applications and rapid expansion of the networked user group, Internet traffic has been increasing dramatically, and network congestion appears to be a more and more critical issue. Congestion control mechanisms are very important in guaranteeing the stability of Internet. Moreover, a suitable congestion control mechanism is the basis for other Quality-of-Service (QoS) mechanisms to work effectively. In this thesis, end-to-end congestion control and IP-layer congestion control mechanisms are reviewed. Current research directions are discussed. Active queue management is the research focus of this thesis. Using network-simulation software (ns-2), several active queue management mechanisms are compared. Based on the comparative analysis and experimental verification, the methods of traffic classification are investigated, and a new active queue management approach is proposed. |
