Product Data Management (PDM) is one of the rapidly developing technologies in software industry recently, which manages all information and processes associated with product during lifecycle. In this thesis, component technology is applied to PDM application. Component technology, software architecture, UML and some theories about them are studied. Component-based software developments and the method of component analysis based on UML are presented. Product structure and configuration management is an important part of PDM system, which bestrides all the product lifecycle with responsibility for product data organization and management. On the basis of domain analysis of product structure and configuration management, the system is analyzed and the software architecture is designed on component-based software development The design of several typical components developed in the system is analyzed. These components include database access component, product template management component, product structure management component, product configuration management component and BOM transformation component. The technologies and algorithms employed for these components are presented. A prototype system for PDM, which is mainly used for product structure and configuration management, is implemented based on these components. Product data management in large-scale complicated product design is primarily realized using the system.
