| Fu Zengxiang was born in a scholarly family, and with its influence he was keen on collecting books and has a strong ability to differentiate. In his early years he was engaged in the political affairs for a time. He rushed about from south to north throughout China and spared no pains in collecting books in all his life, which exceed 200,000 volumes, and thus he was the celebrated book-collector and edition bibliographer in the late Qing Dynasty and early the Republic of China. With the book-collecting principle "beginning with differentiating and collecting, then collating, finishing with spreading" , Fu Zengxiang regarded collating books as his favorite hobby. His preface and postscript is a general picture to understand existence and loss of modern rare books, and plays an important role in researching culture history, press history of our country, and especially in differentiating and sorting out the ancient books of today. The books arranged by him were widely spread, and he denoted all his collected books to the public library before approaching his end. He really accomplished mastering books but not being controlled by books, and thus became a modern master in the history of document science. This thesis carries on a systematic arrangement on Mr. Fu' s achievement in document science and makes a detailed study in his activities and thought of book-collecting, thought of edition bibliography, collating activities and thought .
