With the rapid development of network, the network traffic is growing accordingly, and has strong burst. Traffic protocol also has been improved, and the scales become more and more wider. The diversification is very conspicuous. The improvement and the change of network bring forth new technology to evaluate the system according the network performance. But the characteristic result in that the modeling, simulation, analysis and amendment become very important and difficult.By monitoring and analyzing quantity actual network traffic, the results of traditional Poisson traffic model differ greatly with actual traffic in network performance, so Poisson traffic model is not suitable for actual network. Through the study of network traffic, it can be found that the network traffic has self-similarity in evidence. In this paper, the definitions of self-similarity and the analysis of the self-similar performance are given first. Then the methods to judge the self-similar sequence are been listed. The self-similar models are also introduced and its influence to network. As new models, the self-similar models can more accurately described network performance than the traditional models. And they can produce enormous effect to the design, control, analysis and management to network. The self-similarity in wire network has been in the ascendant, but in wireless data network, it has not many conclusions. This paper adopts the variance-time diagram analysis method on a wireless data network(CDPD), and concludes that there isself-similarity in wireless data network. Basing on this, use Network Simulator (NS) which is developed by Lawrence Berkeley in California in US simulates link utilization and the queueing delay. Through comparison with the traditional model performance, the conclusion that when using the self-similar model, the network performances are more approaching to actual network performance than traditional model can be got. So the self- similarity not only exists in the wireless data network(CDPD), but also offers the reliance on the evaluation, formulation and design for wireless data network.
