In history, the folk music tradition is very long in the central region of ShaanxiProvince,the music of Shuihui(the pray for rain) has been widely spread in Lantiancounty, hence the name‘Lantian shuihui Music’,it is primarily used to the pray for rainrituals and various folk customs,it contains some religious content and strong flavor offolk.The structure of Lantian shuihui music is Qupai form, it is a folk instrumentalgenre which use wind and percussion instrument.There are many Shuihui music bands in local villages, the word of mouth historyand local history recorded the situation,such as Qiushumiao village, Tianjia village andQuanjialing Village, the active period of Shuihui music bands can be traced back toQing Dynasty at least. In 1960s to 1970s, as the historical reasons, the Shuihui musicalmost had been lost until the early 1980s, with the opening of cultural environment,people had gotten some investigation and research, however, the research work ofShuihui musical culture did not continue due to some objective reasons.Shuihui musichad been assessed national intangible cultural heritage in 2006, performances andpublicity work has been carried out in support of national favorable policies. But today,the veteran muscians have passed away, the old instruments and music scoremanuscripts can not be found,a number of heritage tunes has been lost gradually, therelative scarcity of research material is the obstacle to current research, it is extremelynecessary and urgent to investigate and research the existing Shuihui music.There is a only Shuihui music band in Quanjialing village of Puhua town ofLantian county, it is the only living Shuihui music band currently. The music heritage ofQuanjialing village include instrumental ensemble and rhyme lyrics. Instrumental tunesis the principal part of Shuihui music,it categorised into Xingyue(marching music)andZuoyue(chamber music)in difference function, tunes, instrument and form ofperformances, it is the main content of Shuihui music that instrumental tunes heritage.So, the essential study in this paper consists of the melody shape, musical function andits cultural implication of the instrumental tunes of Shuihui music.It is a closely relationship between the Shuihui music and the folk religion, folkcustoms and official ritual culture in the history, the music form and music function ofShuihui music has been colored by the combination of factors mentioned above, so thatshowing the interfelted fusion. Access to the historical recording, can be feel theinfluence of the national system, idea about music, social life and economic situation,these factors shaped the music culture.In the same time, the tunes also changed in thespreading process of folk music, the secularization and regionalization of the musicalmaterial, also changing the music modality imperceptibly.It naturally leads to the exploration of the culture of Shuihui music through researchingof the melody shape. With the help of Cultural-anthropological, I tride to interpretesome of the typical "symbol" in the Shuihui concepts and behavior, becauseunderstanding the cultural background deeply is good for comprehending the Shuihuimusic and its function.
