Johannes Brahms (1883-1897), a famous Germany composer and pianist, as wellas the advocator of Classicism during the Romantic Period, had been opposed to theprogram music with a deep thought of bucking the trend of music. However, thefeature of program music has arose in his composition——D minor Ballade. Thecomposer put the narrative words ahead of the work, indicating that he had thedefinite narrative requirements and obvious thought of literature. D minor Ballade isan classic work of piano which was played by many well-known pianists andresearched by many theorists around the world. The author of this thesis selected anew study angle——potency dimension and tempo, researching and comparing thedifferent versions of performance among William Backhouse (German), Arturo mKelland Jerry (Italy), Glen Gould (Canada), so as to find out the differences amongthe performance of the three pianists, of which the results will provide reference andsupport to the thesis concerned.
