Chinese landscape painting occupies a very important position as characterized painting ofChina in the history of Chinese painting. Landscape painting theory summarizes the variousaesthetic theory and painting requests by the development of landscape painting. The sentence of“Observe appearance from a far distance, observe the potential from a short distance” is anaesthetic theory,which emphasized the concept of the overall and details of the picture. In thispaper, the appearance and potential as a starting point, which not only gives about a moredetailed explanation as closely, but also as a whole about the importance of the two inseparable.Through the appearance and potential concepts, features and philosophy overview, the firstchapter shows that the appearance and potential are two important factors in landscape painting.Through the integrated use of both of appearance and potential,the appearance and potential canexpress the most original and impartial status and it defined the mountains and river as theleading actor and present the all kinds of painting methods and skills and painting principle andmix up with painter’s thoughts, motion, mood and culture. All kinds of factors intertwined witheach other in works. The appearance and potential in Chinese landscape painting demonstrated inits rich language,but also showed different characteristics, which is the concept of appearanceand potential in the picture extension and summary. The landscape painting has developed fromsprout situation to the mainstream which depends on the ancient philosophy. Confucianism spiritculture’s temperament is match with the landscape’s temperament in some extent. Theexpression of appearance and potential has accepted to the concept of philosophy. The secondand third chapters start a detailed discussion about the specific performance of the appearanceand potential in the landscape painting, which is the different applications of ink languages,painting techniques. Appearance and potential is either the most basic, superficial and expressiveink language or the most influential and essential interior expression. Chinese landscape keepsup with the times, so the times characteristic of appearance and potential are becoming obvious.The last chapter summarizes the aesthetic requirements of the appearance and potential andproposed the development orientation.This paper analysis the appearance and potential comprehensively and deeply from differentview based on lots of material to explore the value of Chinese landscape painting when paintingand appreciating. And it also makes the Chinese landscape painting has a more bright future.
