In2004, Elfriede Jelinek became the first Austrian authoress under the honor of Nobel. She is one of the most controversial authors in the Germany literature field for her description on sexual violence and severe criticism on the government. During her lifelong writing, Jelinek has put female fate as her writing focus to uncover the unjust treatment faced by women and the source of their miserable fates. The thesis selects Jelinek’s Die Liebhaberinnen and Gier for further study. Die Liebhaberinnen, published in1975, has be acknowledged as her masterpiece. However, the novel has aroused heated debate as soon as its publication for the following reasons:on the one hand, some people hold that the work is disgusting for its negative effect without caring for characters in the novel. Some even think that the author is not human, on the contrary, she must be mean, vicious and cold. On the other hand, some people take it that it is a fine irony work. They regard it as a fable on women’s liberation and an objective social report on love and hate. B is published in2000. Wiener Zeitung views that Gier provides an artistic criticism on Austrian government. The novel carries on her consistent theme, namely, the aridity of female emotional world. There is still another point deserving attention which is the relation between human and ecological environment which shows the author’s caring for ecological environment. The thesis provides an analytical study on the two novels based on the narrative theory. It consists of the following five parts:the Introduction mainly introduces Jelinek and reviews on previous researches on the two novels both at home and abroad; the second part analyzes the reciprocal structure and ring structure featured in the two novels so as to point out the influence of narrative method on the expression of theme; the third part firstly expounds on labels of topic and figures, and then further probes into the inner relation between labels and the theme; the forth part analyzes the application of rhetoric of free direct speech and of symbols, and then makes a deeper study on how narrative language are used to reflect the theme of the two novels; the last part is the conclusion of the thesis which summarizes the main viewpoints of the paper macroscopically.
