In the inoculation of civilization for thousands of years, Chinese calligraphy of flowers and birds not onlyintegrates the temperaments of calligraphy and painting together, but also contains national culture and artisticcharm. It is the most representative annotation of Chinese character graphic art. In ancient times, we have theinscription of “Sword of King Gouzhou”, imperial jade seal of the First Emperor of Qin–“God’s Will of LongLife and Prosperity”, and “Stone Tablet for the Prince Becoming Immortal” in Tang Dynasty; nowadays, thereare “Dragon and Phoenix Bringing Prosperity”,“Spirit, Qi, and Soul”, and “Blessing of Birds”. Most of themhave been applied to New Year pictures or couplets, in ingenious combination between characters and pictures.In-depth analysis is given to calligraphy of flowers and birds from the perspective of graph in this paper:firstly, the development origin of calligraphy of flowers and birds is arranged on the basis of numerous historicalmaterials. Secondly, form and content of calligraphy of flowers and birds are analyzed in detail, including formalcharacteristics of calligraphy of flowers and birds, content and expression of calligraphy of flowers and birds,graphic creativity of calligraphy of flowers and birds, and color of calligraphy of flowers and birds. Thirdly,through field investigation in Pizhou of Jiangsu which is the hometown for calligraphy of flowers and birds,tools and writing skills of calligraphy of flowers and birds are illustrated, and a graph is made for clearunderstanding. Finally, the influence generated by graph of calligraphy of flowers and birds on modern graphicaldesign for characters as well as its practice are elaborated. The research purpose is to gain a deep understandingabout form, content, originality and connotation of calligraphy of flowers and birds from the angle of graph, soas to stimulate aesthetic consciousness for it. Meanwhile, it can also help us comprehend the magnificentdeposits of China’s folk art and trigger new reflection on graphical design for characters.
