The research object of this thesis is the material and technique language in the famous Austrian painter Gustav Klimt.’s paintings. Klimt’s style is full of unique personal characteristics, especially his golden decoration style period,it’s material and technique language is the most representative. The publications on the research of Klimt’s style spread all over the world, most are about his study of compositions,colors, symbols. The study on the aspect of material and technique language can be counted on one’s fingers. Read all the information,we can generalize the characteristics of Klimt to two words "decoration" and "aestheticism". Around the two key features, from the point of material and technique language, the further researches on Klimt’s paintings are the supplement and extension of the previous data.It is conducive to understanding the master Klimt in all directions.Firstly,I analyze Klimt’s life and the social background. One human’s personality,style,thought are often inseparable with his life. From those dazzling "golden" works we can see his father, brothers who are goldsmiths influenced Klimt deeply. Similarly, the alma mater, tutors laid Klimt a solid foundation for his painting. While the tangled and complex feelings about women during all his life is the source of inspiration. Vienna Secession Klimt belongs,is the Austria Vienna branch belongs to Art Nouveau. Vienna workshop is a handicraft workshop to uphold Vienna Secession’s artistic conception.Their characteristics, developmental trend are bound to affect Klimt.Secondly, in chronological order, the author divides Klimt’s life into the early classical period, middle golden decoration style period and late expressionism style period. Summarizing painting style characteristics of each period.At the same time,the author also analyze the changes in his landscape paintings. By comparing the style of Klimt in horizontal and vertical directions and dissecting all the styles, paintings and themes, we have a unified interpretation of Klimt’s life. Furthermore, Klimt’s golden decoration style period is the most brilliant, mature period for his material techniques. Into the exotic art, Klimt led the meaning of materials and techniques in decoration ways more strong.From the two aspects-Ukiyoe and Byzantine painting, the author discusses Klimt’s favorite exotic art. Explaining gilding and gelled patterning and gilding the two primary crafts Klimt used in golden style period in the materials and techniques ways seriously. Analysing and comparing eastern and western "golden" paintings to find the differences and associations between them, and to deepen the understanding of materials and techniques.Klimt was not for "decoration" to "decoration", his aesthetic and luxury paintings were full of "life" and "life and death" thoughts, so he belongs to the Symbolist painter. His works were called "the visions of Freud’s theories". His style deeply influenced the younger Egon Schiele, Kokoschka and the followed Art Deco painters,even brought a fresh vitality to Chinese paintings.At the same time,the analysis, researches on Klimt’s materials and techniques, provide me with a newer and more comprehensive train of thoughts to exploration in aestheticism, planarity,and decoration.
