A Study On The Textual Function Of "Ba" Sentence

This thesis investigate the textual function of Ba construction from the perspective of text, analyzing the function of main syntactic components and sub-structures in different types of text. This thesis has been divided into four chapters.Chapter I has investigated the textual function of subject of Ba construction. From perspective of form, zero form subject(subject ellipsis) has the closest relationship with the text, followed by the pronominal form, while the nominal form is the weakest of the three forms. Zero form subject has strongest anaphora cohesion, while pronominal form has strongest cataphora cohesion, and the textual cohesion of nominal form is weakest. From the perspective of text, subject of Ba construction in narrative text and dialogue text has most closely semantic relation with context, but in commentary text and expository text, the semantic relation is not close; Subject of Ba construction in dialogue text has strongest textual cohesion, followed by commentary text, while narrative text has weakest anaphora cohesion, and expository text has weakest cataphora cohesion.Chapter II has investigated the textual function of object of Ba construction. From perspective of form, pronominal object has the closest relationship with the text, and its textual cohesion is the strongest, followed by nominal form, while the predicative form is the weakest of the three forms. From the perspective of text, object of Ba construction in narrative text has most closely semantic relation with context, but in expository text, the semantic relation is not close, while in commentary text and dialogue text, semantic relation with preceding part of the text is closely but semantic relation with below part is not closely; object of Ba construction in narrative text has weakest textual cohesion, dialogue text centred, while expository text has strongest anaphora cohesion, and commentary text has strongest cataphora cohesion.Chapter III has investigated the textual function of verb of Ba construction. From perspective of form, verb-complement structure appeared most times. From perspective of semantic relation, the situation of verb of Ba construction connected with verb in preceding part of the text appeared most times. From the perspective of text, The textual cohesion of Ba construction in different types of text from high to low were:commentary text> dialogue text> expository text> narrative Discourse.Chapter IV has investigated the textual function of sub-structures of Ba construction. The intensity of Ba construction in different types of text from high to low were: expository text> narrative text> commentary text> dialogue text. From the perspective of sub-structures of Ba construction, the frequency of N1+Ba+N2+V+C is the highest, while different text has different typical sub-structures, take dialogue text for instance, the typical sub-structures is N1+Ba+N2+V+resultative complement.From the perspective of semantic relation, Ba construction as subsequent sentence appeared most times, and it has most closely semantic relation with context in narrative text, while in commentary text, the semantic relation is not close.
