Wei-Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasty of China is the period that has the most frequent changes of regime in Chinese history. The changes also had serious impact on the developments of Chinese culture. The outstanding performances were the rise of Metaphysics which were a combination of Confucianism and Taoism and the prevalence of Buddhism. The culture during this period was expressed in a complicated way because of the interplay of various cultural factors. Liu Xie created the book named literary mind and the carving of dragons which was the first literary theory monograph in the history of the Chinese Literary Criticism. The rich variety of cultural connotations was also a reflection of that era.Previous studies have gradually found a lot of examples of Liu’s concept of Buddhism in the book of the literary mind and the carving of dragons. This thesis aims to discuss Liu’s concept of Buddhism based on the other two eminent writers and their related works. One is Liu Xie and the literary mind and the carving of dragons,the other is monk Seng-zhao who was a little older than Liu and his famous works about Non-sunya Theory called Three Theses of Seng-zhao. The thesis disserts from four parts.The first part is an introduction, which mainly describes the reasons for choosing these two works and summarizes previous scholars’ research achievements of Liu’s Buddhist thought.The second part discusses the theoretical possibility of Liu’s Buddhist thought which inherited from Seng-zhao, stats Liu’s and Seng-zhao’s life time, analyses the writing background of the two important works, and finds out the strong possibility which Liu used to read Seng-zhao’s book and be impacted by Seng-zhao directly.The third part mainly analyzes the similarity of the two works on the thought of radical reform and madhyamika, which proves that the evidence which Liu inherited the thought of Sunya from Seng-zhao.The fouth part is the conclusion. And putting forward innovation and significance of this study.
