A Study Of Persuasive Speech Act In Modern Chinese

Persuasive speech act frequently appears in daily life. As it is a kind of communication behavior which threatens the hearers’ negative face, it is necessary for us to make a pragmatic study on it, in order to achieve effective and appropriate communication, maintain the harmonious interpersonal relationship between communicators. We based on the persuasive speech act in the dynamic communication,described the characteristics and the role of communication, made definition and classifications for persuasive speech act. Through the observation and analysis of the collected data, according to the time order of the persuasion process, we divided the persuasive discourse structure into three parts: the preparatory discourse sequences, the formal persuasion discourse sequences, and the supplementary discourse sequences, and explained the contents of every part. We tried to explain the pragmatic strategies from the social psychology on persuasion.The realization of persuasive speech act needs both sides’ cooperation, we take the adjacent pair for the unit to discuss the response patterns of persuasive speech act.According to the final results of the hearer to persuasive behavior feedback, the answer modes were divided into two kinds: accepting mode and refusing to accept mode.Finally, we focused on the influential factors to persuasive speech act’s realization, and summarized the context and interpersonal factors that had an effect on it. Through the analysis of the factors, we can provide the explanations of why persuader chose the persuasive forms and how the persuadee understood it.
