Lexical cohesion as an important part of textual cohesion appeals to linguists. They have carried out research and studies on lexical cohesion from different perspectives.Among them, Hoey’s lexical cohesion pattern renders us a new method for the analysis of lexical cohesion between sentences. It is of distinct advantage not only in clarification and operation. Based on Hoey’s model for our analysis, this thesis collects two groups of English abstracts as the subject of our research randomly, one is from thesis abstracts of native speakers of English and the other is from thesis abstracts of Chinese students in the discipline of applied linguistics. Adopting the research method of qualitative and quantitative analysis, the research attempts to explore the similarities and differences in the application of lexical cohesion of English abstracts of thesis between native speakers and Chinese students by virtue of software AntConc3.2.4w and the function of independent samples test of SPSS statistic software and further explain the reasons behind them. The findings show that English abstracts of thesis written by Chinese students and those written by native speakers are statistically different on the simple repetition and simple paraphrase while they are not statistically different on complex repetition, complex paraphrase, substitution, co-reference and ellipsis. Finally,a conclusion is made that the research and findings of the topic provide Chinese postgraduates some practical suggestions on the writing of English abstracts and foreign language teaching.
