Research On Overseas Chinese Thomas

Aliens,as the master of Shanghai Concession in the modern era,are one important part of researching in the history of Shanghai.It is a mirror of modern Shanghai history.It is better to understand the society of Shanghai Concession and analyze the communication and fusion between two different cultures.At present,the academia has little achievement in this field,especially lacks the concrete research about individuals.This article takes the English alien——Thomas Hanbury for example and make a concrete study on it.Hanbury is a trademan,horticulrist and philanthropist.He came to Shanghai in 1853,and stayed here nearly 20 years.He made a fortune by trading here an d became the wealthy landowner;he once served as a member for the Settleme nt;and made efforts for Shanghai’s education and philanthropy.He benefited fro m Shanghai,so did Shanghai.After returning Britain,he went to Italy and settle d at La Mortola.He made a famous garden here;he built schools for Italy and developed its education;he made a lot charity work for it;he received the Chine se ambassador——Kuo Sung tao and give opinions to The Times on problems of China and Shanghai.For all his life,he lived abroad mostly.He was a foreign er for China and Italy.In culture,this research on it can show the communicatio n and fusion of different cultures and enrich the study of alien history.The text is made of three parts:the fist tells the introduction of Thomas Hanbury;the se cond is about his conductions in Shanghai,including economic,politic,education,c harity and so on, and the background he comes to Shanghai;The third is about his conductions in Italy,containing making Hanbury Garden,helping to develop the Italy’s education and other activities.The last tells some thinking under the study of the English alien——Thomas Hanbury,estimating him in a fair and o bjective manner and having some thoughts on it.
