The period of the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century,numerous chinese elites and patriots rose up one after another and fought for changing the semi-colonial and semi-feudal society of China.They carried out the Westernization Movement、Wu Hsu Reform and the Revolution of 1911 but failed to change the turbulent situation and the social nature one time after another.Given this,Liang Qichao gradually realized the national’s incorrigbility is the root of their failure through a series of reform and revolution.He believed that “if there were newmen,there would be new system、new government and new country”.So we must cultivate new nation in order to make the new country、new government and new system come true.However,the key is to make people set up the public morality consciousness including patriotism and nationalism consciousness insead of changing people’s servility 、 body-hugging oligonucleotides and selfish national character.Therefore,Liang Qichao began to use the concept of public morality and private morality to discuss the chinese traditional culture and chinese social problems,expounding the content、function of the public morality and private morality and the relationships between them in detail.One flaw cannot obscure the splendor of the jade.We can not deny that the idea put forward was contributed to set off a wave of nationalism and patriotism,which was useful to changes people’s servility and awake and enlighte the National consciousness. Especially,it is of great significance and value to handle the relationship between public morality and private morality in reference and reflection,even though there existed many prolems in the elaboration and demonstration.Such as,the logic is not strict, inconsistent and lack of sufficient evidence. Besides,the proof method is not scientific and the theory of system is not completed and deep enough.The history as the background,in this paper, I run through and explore the following questions combing the Liang Qichao’s books and the literature resources of other scholars, according to the ethics research method system.In the first place,it introduces the historical background and theory origin of civic virtue of Liang Qichao. At the same time,it illustrates the meaning and purpose of Newman and claims that civic virtue play an important role in the process of cultivating newman.In the second place, it summarizes the public morality in Newman essay,covering the basic connotation、reason and the realization method.The later part introduces the private morality, including the meaning and reason of degenerate, way to cultivation and the cause of as the first prerequisite,etc.In the third place,it summarizes and reflects the unity of independent relationship between public morality and private morality.The emphase is to solve the argument of the effect of public morality 、 the degeneration of private morality and the Extrapolation theory at the turning of Liang Qichao’s thought based on the first two chapters content.In the fourth place,it explores the path to cultivate the public morality and private morality on the basis of Liang Qichao’s own cultivation path in the new period.Last part,it analyzes the contemporary value and realistic significance of liang Qichao research on public morality and private morality and the relationships between them in Newman Essay.
