A Multi - Modal Study On The Relationship Between Chinese Painting And Painting

This paper uses Text World Theory and Conceptual Blending Theory to analyse conceptual relation of picture and language demonstrated in multimodal discourse of Chinese painting, so as to achieve a deeper understanding of painting-poem relation in Chinese art.Firstly, Text World theory is used to analyze language-picture relation in this paper. Four types of painting-poem relations are defined in this paper based on the text worlds of picture and language in Chinese painting with poem. They are Identical Text World, Similar Text World, Hierarchal Text World and Text World with Different Ontological Structure. Analysis of semantic features of each type is also conducted in this paper.Furthermore, conceptual blending of language and picture in painting-poem multimodal discourse is analysed. As is found in this paper, when their text world is identical(Identical Text World), there is no conceptual blending between picture and language; when their text world is similar(Similar Text World), mental space of language and picture blend, but there is no compression between two inputs; when their text world relation is hierarchal(Hierarchal Text World), there is compression of vital relation between mental spaces of poem and painting; when language and picture has different ontological structure, conceptual blending could not be found between text world of language and enactor accessible text world of picture. However, picture and language blended at the level of participant accessible text world and there is vital relation compression between participant accessible text worlds of picture and language.
