In simultaneous interpreting, interpreters should interpret simultaneously when the spokesman speaks. That is to say, interpreters must finish the task of listening, interpreting and speaking in a short time. Besides, there are many long sentences in English. The sophisticated structure brings tremendous difficulties to simultaneous interpreting. Interpreters should use syntactic linearity to catch up with the spokesman,to analyze the syntactic structure and logic level and to seek for accurate interpretation. For the maximal use of syntactic linearity, certain skills should also be applied. There are three skills, namely segmentation, amplification and conversion being discussed in this thesis. On the basis of segmentation, interpreters join two sentences effectively by means of amplification, and then convert the expression according to the rules in the Chinese language. This thesis elaborates the syntactic linearity, segmentation, amplification and conversion through analyzing ways of using syntactic linearity and the three skills in Obama’s dialogue in Fudan University which is interpreted simultaneously by interpreters. The thesis can help students who learn and practice interpreting use these skills to interpret long English sentences into proper Chinese sentences and better accomplish the task of simultaneous interpretation.
