The Humanistic Psychologist Maslow holds that all human behaviors are caused by certain motivations which are stimulated by human needs. Meanwhile, human needs are progressive which means that the satisfaction of the lower-level need will stimulate the producing of the higher-level need and when condition permits, self-actualization will be achieved. The over a century old history of the Macon Dead family in Song of Solomon written by the American writer Tony Morrison confirms Maslow’s theory very well. The satisfaction of the lower-level needs of the family members stimulate the producing of their higher-level needs, for which the members keep on fighting. Due to the continuous satisfaction of their needs, the Deads are able to multiply. Therefore, considering from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory will lead to a further explanation of the inner force that pushes the Deads’ continuation and make the theme more comprehensive.
