It is not until 1980 s when Lackoff and Johnson redefined metaphor from the cognitive perspective and put forward the conceptual metaphor theory, metaphor was widely considered as a kind of language rhetoric in traditional metaphor theory. Lackoff and Johnson’s contribution paved the way for the later studies in the metaphor field. Using the Russian news headlines as the research object, the present study attempts to analyze the metaphorical phenomenon in the titles from the cognitive perspective, identifying the types and analyzing the function. The paper is intended to contribute to the body of researches on metaphor of titles, in the meantime, expected to exert a positive influence on Russian teaching.The paper comprises three parts in total: the introduction, the main body and conclusion. In the introduction section, the research background of the studies on Russian news titles are introduced, based on which the objective, significance and methodology of the study are also presented.The main body of the paper is divided into four chapters:Chapter one reviews the previous studies on the Russian newspaper headlines and the metaphor in the press, whereby, summarizes the current state and development trend of researches on metaphor of Russian newspapers, which helps determine the research direction of this paper.Chapter two illustrates the definitions, classification and function of newspaper headlines, and provides a clear context for analyzing metaphor phenomenon in headlines.Chapter three exposits conceptions related to metaphor in cognitive linguistics, and makes a further exploration into the conceptual metaphor theory, which serves as the theoretical basis for the present study.Chapter four is the essential part of the entire paper, and it discusses the types of conceptual metaphors in Russian headlines and analyzes their function respectively. At last, the author summarized the findings in the conclusion part.The innovation of this article lies in applying the relevant theories of metaphor in cognitive linguistics to analyze the use of metaphor in Russian news headlines.
