W. H. Medhurst was one of the the English churchman who came to China atthe middle of nineteenth Century. He has made a lot of achievements in his booktranslation and the spread of Christianity, scholars tend to focus on these two aspects,but there are few people who discuss his Chinese view and the book Notices onChinese Grammar which was written for foreigners to learn Chinese. The paperanalyze the examples in this book and classify the examples in accord to summarizesW. H. Medhurst’s Chinese view and the enlightenments that W. H. Medhurst’sNotices on Chinese Grammar brings to teaching Chinese as a foreign language.The paper contains three parts: The first chapter is an introduction, introducingthe significance of this article, research status and research plan. On the selected topicsignificance, it mainly relates to two reasons, one is to research the missionary in thelate Qing dynasty more deeply, the other is to deepen the research of spread betweenChinese and foreign language. On the research status, it mainly analyzes the study inchina and other countries. The plan of the research provides us with the research goal,ways and difficult points with innovations.The second chapter is the core of the paper, which approaches the book Noticeson Chinese Grammar from the following three aspects, first, brief introduction refersto the contents of the book, second, he didn’t have a definition of the various parts ofspeech, but rather through examples for readers to understand the usage of all kinds ofwords, introductions on the order that mentions in the book which according to W. H.Medhurst’s nine parts of speech.at the same time the author classify the examples.Third, introductions that Notices on Chinese Grammar’s contents about Chinesepronunciation, character, and vocabulary. At the last, the author summarizes W. H.Medhurst’s Chinese view.The third chapter mainly introduces the enlightenments that W. H. Medhurst’sNotices on Chinese Grammar brings to teaching Chinese as a foreign language fromthree aspects, including teaching Chinese pronunciation, teaching Chinese characterand teaching Chinese vocabulary. In his book, W. H. Medhurst discussed Chinesepronunciation, Chinese character, and distinction among different characterscomprehensively. He holds the point that the Chinese spelling and application ofChinese vocabulary should be the most important and difficult for leaners, which will bring inspiration to the process of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. We shouldprepare teaching methods about how to solve the questions that mentioned aboveduring the process of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
