In the modern society, electronic media have big impact on traditional publishing industry, the fates of books are the common concern of designers and the whole society. Will books be replaced by e-books? What is the developing trend of books? Where is the turning point of them? All of these questions should be thought and answered by book designers. The biggest difference between books and E-books are paper, as a result, it is becoming more and more important to choose a right kind of paper in a book design, especially in this time that E-books are everywhere. This essay is trying to do some research on different kinds of paper: why different paper can give readers different feelings and how can book designers use paper to convey emotions in a book design, etc.In the past few decades, “book decoration” has been changed into “book design” by Chinese book designers, it was not just the change of language, but also the different way of thinking of Chinese book design, and it really was a big step of the filed. As the methods of book design increasingly rich day by day, paper material has been constantly innovated. In the recent years, there are more and more artistic paper showing in the market and they have been applied in many modern book designs.The rich of paper material have provided book designers more choice and more room for their imagination. It has become a basic standard of a professional book designer that if he or she knows about the relationship between paper emotional role and the spirits of books, and the relationship of paper and printing. It has become a very important question and research of book designers that how to use paper to pass on spirits and emotions to readers in a book design, this is also the research of my graduation design, because the thought of designers which towards the relationship between paper and books can decide the development of books in the future.
