In this paper, the method of musical ethnography is used to research “Baimao shan’ge” of Changshu in Jiangsu province. Composition is also a writing method using musical ethnography which is focused on “music heritage”. So it also can be called as “heritage record”, which is an overview of Baimao shan’ge heritage. There are all five chapters including Overview, Field investigation of heritage status, Analysis of “music forms” in heritage, Analysis of “music performance behavior” in heritage and finally answer the question of “Why they sing Baimao shan’ge?”What does shan’ge mean for local people? The writer makes investigations with local inheritor, folk singers, school teachers and students, researchers, government officers, ordinary people to recover Baimao shan’ge heritage forms, and then concludes that: “Regarding research on folk art such as Baimao shan’ge and the likes, it is important not only to research on folk music forms and literature value, but also to focus on the development process of music. Only when putting the music under its cultural circumstance, and doing research on music related “individual” and music performance behavior, you can fully understand this music form.”...
