As a new art form in the New Media Era, micro film, which has underwent three development period- germination, transition and prosperity, has constantly improved and aroused attention from academic world. Taking micro film as research object, this thesis focuses on the micro narration and tries to generalize its distinct features and patterns, in comparison with narrative modes employed in traditional and modern films. The introduction analyzes the current situation of academic research on micro film. It is revealed that this new art form has been studied by a growing number of scholars and media professionals from perspectives of communication, advertising and economics. This thesis can further improve the research on micro film by focusing on micro narration and applying narrative theories to a comparative analysis of micro films and traditional films. In chapter 1, micro era and micro culture are analyzed. Micro-media era is the era of mobile internet, mini media and high-speed communication. The micro culture, popular and diverse, values the tiny things and explores deep meaning from small words. Microfilm is a new art form in micro era and micro culture. It is referred to mini-movie and also known as video clip with whole plots, which can be played on new media platforms and watched at any time.Chapter 2 focuses on three micro-film themes:grassroots narration, youth narration and urban narration. Different from grand narrative in films, micro-film reflects the reality and reveals subtle emotion and spirit from a small viewing angle. The everyday life narration and comedy spirit in the grassroots theme, the pains in growing up, self-identity and utopian fantasy in the youth theme and the materialism and underclass narrative ways in the urban theme all inject vitality into the art of film and TV with an easygoing and tiny narrative pattern.Chapter 3 focuses on the characteristics of the forms of micro narration in the perspective of narrative strategy. Firstly, micro-film is featured with micro time and micro space. Secondly, confined by the micro time and micro space, the narrative of micro film generally presents the characteristics of fragment, mainly manifesting on three aspects: combination narrative, open narrative and non-linear narration. In addition, the interactive narrative of micro film has changed the way of traditional narrative mode, and also increased micro-film narrative possibilities.Chapter 4 firstly reflects the problems in micro narration, including the disorder of narrative environment, the lack of professional knowledge, the erosion of commercialization and the blindness of the audiences. To overcome this dilemma, microfilm should be constructed from "shape", "emotion" and "meaning". In terms of "shape", the micro-film maker should improve the professional and technical ability, including how to deal with color, sound and scene layout. In terms of " emotion ", the micro-film maker should get rid of the temptation of market and interest and create his works seriously and responsibly. The maker should help audiences cultivate healthy emotion and rational spirit. In terms of "meaning", the micro-film maker should not only reveal the true meaning of real life, but also should pursue high aesthetic value and cultivate the transcendence of the audience.Micro films and micro narration are products of new era, and they provide a platform for everyone to become an artist and provide a space for people to fully express themselves. Anyway, micro film still has a long way to go.
