As two giants in Tang Dynasty’s poetry circle, both Li Bai and Du Fu have composed poems on the roads towards Shu. However, these poems on differ significantly on artistic features and vary a lot in creative thinking, mindset, artistic expression and aesthetic style, which may be attributable to differences in the two great poets’experiences, ideological origin, artistic personality and literary legacies’ inheritance. After studying Li Bai and Du Fu’s poems on landscapes, we can see that the writing mode found in their poems on the road towards Shu also prevail in their other landscape poems. Therefore, we could reason that the road towards Shu can serve as a classic paradigm for the two poets’landscape poems. This essay would focus on discussing the common features in composing landscape poems and the poems on the road towards Shu, and elaborate in three chapters on Li Bai and Du Fu’s writing mode for landscape poems.Chapter#1 would analyze the poems towards Shu composed by Li Bai and Du Fu and discuss their respective artistic features, aesthetic styles and thinking mode in a bid to find their writing mode for poems on the road towards Shu.Chapter#2 starts from Li Bai’s writing mode for poems on the road towards Shu and seeks to understand its applications and expansions in his other landscape poems. His writing mode is mainly reflected in two aspects:1) painting an imaginary landscape with his creative thought; 2) expressing his personal aspiration via describing landscape.Chapter#3 starts from Du Fu’s writing mode for poems on the road towards Shu and seek to understand its applications and expansions in other landscape poems. His writing mode is mainly reflected in three folds:1) documenting landscapes; 2) expressing personal sorrow; 3) voicing his aspiration to serve the country despite being outside the government.With Li Bai and Du Fu’s poems on the road towards Shu as a starting point, the essay aims to discuss the common features and association of its writing mode with their landscape poems. It also aims to offer a new window to see the differences between Li Bai and Du Fu in their spiritual worlds, their relationship between landscapes and their artistic personalities as expressed in their landscape poems.
